A baked bean in tomato sauce with a spicy twist. Delicious as a snack or a side. An asset to any meal. Serve with toast, pita bread, chapatis, etc.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 green chile pepper, seeded and minced
  • ¼ teaspoon ground coriander
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon garam masala
  • ¼ teaspoon paprika
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 (14 ounce) can baked beans in tomato sauce (such as Heinz®)

Cooking Directions

  1. 1 Heat oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook and stir onion in hot oil for about 2 minutes. Stir chile pepper into onion; continue to cook and stir until the onion softens slightly, 2 to 3 minutes more. Season with coriander, cumin, garam masala, paprika, salt, and pepper; stir. Pour beans into saucepan, mix well, and cook until hot, about 3 minutes.

  1. This recipe is so simple and delicious! A great weeknight side to just about anything. I up the spices a bit and use minced jared jalapenos in them oooh there's a kick there! Great recipe Don.
  2. Nice twist on canned beans. I didn't have any kind of chili peppers so had to leave those out. Served with Chef John's Turkey Burgers (from this site) and the two complimented each other quite well. Will certainly make these again. Thanks Don.
  3. A different twist to baked beans. I made this as written using the ingredients as listed but after sautéing the veggies and adding other ingredients I baked these in the toaster oven.
