This has always been a family favorite. Very rich!

Recipe Ingredients

  • 1 cup dates, pitted and chopped
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 pinch salt
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts
  • ½ cup semisweet chocolate chips

Cooking Directions

  1. 1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease one 9x13 inch baking pan.
  2. 2 Bring water to a boil. Pour over chopped dates and baking soda. Let stand until cool. Stir in the sugar, flour, mayonnaise, and salt. Mix until just combined. Pour batter into prepared pan.
  3. 3 Mix the brown sugar, chopped nuts, and chocolate chips together. Sprinkle over top of batter.
  4. 4 Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 40 to 45 minutes.

  1. This cake is so easy to bake. I made is for work and everyone loved it. It came out so moist and the flavor was perfect. I will be baking this cake often.

  4. Topping ingredients are WAY OFF. I ended up using 1 cup (of each) nuts brown sugar and chocolate chips.
  5. This recipe is easy to make and is a very moist cake. My Mom has made this for years and it is a family favorite. Even people that say they don't like dates just love this cake.
  6. I think this would be very good if made by the recipe. I tried to double the amount of topping so it got a little burnt before the cake got done. It was still good though. I will try it again and follow the recipe next time!
  7. I enjoyed this cake as did my husband but overall it lacked pizzazz. Perhaps I'll experiment with using molasses and brown sugar for a darker cake and maybe some cloves nutmeg and allspice for some kick to it.
  8. When I tried this recipe I sifted my dry ingredients first before adding to the dates/water. I mixed the baking soda with the dry ingredients.   9. Has anyone tried this? My family was very disappointed as the only good about it was the topping. It was heavy and chewy and tasteless.
