I made these for a school carnival, they turned out great. I did not need to frost them. To do something different, divide cream cheese filling into 4 different parts and tint each part a different color. Feel free to get creative with the surprises!

Recipe Ingredients

  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
  • ¼ cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 (6 ounce) package chocolate chips
  • 1 (18.25 ounce) package chocolate cake mix
  • 4 maraschino cherries
  • 4 milk chocolate candy kisses
  • 4 walnut halves
  • 1 (1.4 ounce) bar chocolate covered toffee bars, chopped
  • ⅓ cup raisins
  • ¼ cup candy coated peanut butter pieces

Cooking Directions

  1. 1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line 24 muffin cups with paper liners. In a medium bowl, mix cream cheese, sugar, and egg together until well blended. Stir in chocolate chips. Set aside.
  2. 2 Prepare cake mix according to package instructions. Fill each cup half full. Drop a heaping teaspoonful of cream cheese mix in center of each cupcake. Press one cherry, or chocolate kiss, walnut half, toffee piece, a few raisins or peanut putter pieces in the center of each cupcake.
  3. 3 Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool.

  1. This was awesome but the "heaping spoonful of cream cheese mixture" was a bit off...might need to double that part of the recipe. Family loved it!
  2. cupcakes remind me of when I got a cupcake in school for a prize and I set it on my desk and my friend dropped her pencil. when she bent down to get it she stuck her head in my cupcake her hair was full of frosting it was so funny!!!!!!
  3. I had it brought in as a birthday treat only to find out that there was a problem over the diversity of "treats" in the "muffins" (I refuse to call them cupcakes because they are not cake) ALso some kids with allergies had trouble... Like the nuts and such.
  4. I've been searching for a recipe my grandma used to make and this is pretty darn close. She used the foil mini cups instead of full size. I think her end result is more like a brownie than cake. So call your grandma before she dies don't wait like I did! Anyway I used a - Read more ...
  5. This recipe was so easy to make. I used Hershey Kisses for the surprise inside and everyone loved them. The only thing I added was a chocolate cream cheese frosting which went very well with these cupcakes. I will definitely make them again.
  6. Not so good. Maybe I'll try it with some other cream filling but this one just didn't go over so well. Too much extra stuff on these.
  7. They don't need frosting. Everyone loved them!
  8. The proportions listed in this recipe HAVE to be off. It calls for 8 8oz packages of cream cheese. I used 4 and doubled everything else and STILL had some left over. It said to mix chocolate chips in with the cream cheese but didn't have the chips listed in the ingredients. Not keeping this - Read more ...
  9. There was an error in this recipe as originally published. The original recipe calls for 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese not eight packages. The correct amount now appears on the recipe.
