A totally untraditional but perhaps more delicious version of an apple pie.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ⅓ cup shortening
  • 6 tablespoons cold water
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup white sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ⅓ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 5 apples - peeled, cored and chopped
  • ¾ cup raisins
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup sifted confectioners' sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk

Cooking Directions

  1. 1 To Make Crust: In a large bowl, stir together 1 1/4 cup flour and salt. Cut in shortening until coarse crumbs form. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of water at a time to dough until it is moist enough to form into a ball. On a lightly floured surface, use hands to slightly flatten dough. Roll dough into a circle about 12 inches in diameter.
  2. 2 Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Line a 9 inch deep dish pie pan with a piece of aluminum foil; it should cover bottom and sides of pan. Lightly flour the foil. Press the dough into the pan.
  3. 3 To Make Filling: In a large bowl, stir together 2 tablespoons flour, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Gently toss apples, raisins and walnuts with cinnamon mixture until coated. Fill the crust with the apple mixture.
  4. 4 Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour. Remove from oven and let cool.
  5. 5 To Make Icing: In a small bowl, mix together confectioners' sugar, vanilla and milk. Drizzle over top of cooled pie.

  1. Wow! Made this yesterday, and it's a nice change from the basic apple pie. I did add a top layer of crust and brushed it with milk. The glaze came out nicely on top of the crust.
  2. I added the 2 T of lemon juice over the top of the apples before adding the sugar mixture to toss. I only baked for about 45 minutes because the crust was more than done and the apples were getting overly brown. I let the pie cool and then drizzled with the icing. Upon cutting - Read more ...
  3. This pie is now my families favorite kind of apple pie. My husband usually doesn't care for apple pie and he was skeptical but he LOVED this one! I cheated a bit and bought some ready made pie crust. I did not line the pie pan with foil. This step didn't make sense to me.
  4. I used dried cherries instead of raisins just because I had them on hand. Also added the 2 TB of lemon juice as suggested by the other reviewers. The apple-cherry filling was very good especially when warm from the oven but we didn't care for the crust. Next time I'll use my usual pie crust.
  5. add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  6. It was a succes yesterday on my birthday. What I added to the applemix were two tablespoons of lemonjuice.
