When you need a buttermilk substitute for a recipe, you can make your own. I use this when making my Irish soda bread.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Cooking Directions

  1. 1 Pour milk into a bowl; add lemon juice and stir to combine. Let sit for 5 minutes. Use immediately.

Chef's Notes

You can use white vinegar instead of lemon juice, if you'd like.


  1. I probably add a little more lemon juice to make it thicker. I use it very often and sometimes store a pint jar with a lid on it in my fridge, for the next time, since I make biscuits often.
