Molasses cookie recipe from the 1940’s.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 1 cup white sugar
  • ¾ cup molasses
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup hot water
  • ¾ cup shortening
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 3 teaspoons baking soda

Cooking Directions

  1. 1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. 2 Cream sugar, shortening and molasses together. Mix the baking soda into the hot water. Add dry ingredients alternately with the water mixture.
  3. 3 Drop from a spoon onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes. DO NOT BROWN. Frost with a vanilla frosting if desired.

  1. Next time try blackstrap molasses for more flavor. Roll into patties, coat in sugar, bake for 11 minutes.
  2. These got a pretty solid "eh" from everyone in the family. I spiced them up just as another reviewer suggested (added cloves nutmeg and coffee) and they were still bland. Not BAD just not great. I'm sorry!
  3. My Grandmother and I use this exact recipe but we roll the dough and cut with a large drinking glass then sprinkle sugar on them before baking.Bake for 10-12 minutes at 350.They are the best molasses cookies I ever had.
  4. Kind of bland...but easy to fix the blandness!try adding 1/2 tsp clove 1/4 tsp nutmeg and substitute the 1 c hot water for 1 cup hot coffee!
  5. The cookies were really bland! They didn't have that zing typical of molasses/ginger cookies. On the plus side they were soft and chewy. I iced some of them with powdered sugar icing and it helped give them a little personality but not much.
