Scalloped Oysters

Mild oyster taste with a crunch crumb topping.

Recipe Ingredients

  • ½ cup bread crumbs
  • 25 buttery round crackers, crumbled
  • ½ cup melted butter
  • 1 pint shucked oysters, drained with liquid reserved
  • 1 pinch salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons milk

Cooking Directions

  1. 1 Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Butter a shallow baking dish.
  2. 2 Combine bread crumbs and cracker crumbs; stir in the melted butter. Place a thin layer of the crumb mixture in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Layer the oysters over the crumbs and sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. Pour 2 tablespoons oyster liquid and 1 tablespoon milk over the top. Repeat then cover the top layer with the remaining crumb mixture.
  3. 3 Bake at 450 degrees F (230 degrees C) for 30 minutes.

  1. Delicious. I sauteed 2 stalks finely chopped celery and 2 scallions and dusted each layer with bread crumbs instead of adding to the Ritz crackers and butter mixture. I would make this again.
  2. This recipe is o.k.. There is nothing wrong with it except it's a little dry. I found it to be boring and taste mostly like buttery crackers.

  4. The BEST ever!!! I did saute an onion in the butter before I added it to the crackers and crumbs. I will use this recipe many many times.

  6. I have found ritz crackers work the best and baking at 450 is way to high. 375 works just fine.
  7. I used this recipe at Thanksgiving....It was a great success! The only change I made was to use half and half in place of milk. I found I didn't have to use more than 1/2 cup and felt it made the recipe "richer".
  8. It wouldn't be Thanksgiving in my southern household without this on the table.
