A satisfying, tangy sandwich that is a cinch to make.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 1 slice tempeh
  • ¼ cup sauerkraut
  • 1 slice Swiss cheese
  • 1 tablespoon thousand island salad dressing
  • 2 slices rye bread
  • ½ tablespoon butter

Cooking Directions

  1. 1 Heat a skillet over medium heat. Spread butter over one side of one slice of bread. Place bread butter-side-down into skillet, and top with tempeh, Swiss cheese, and then sauerkraut. Spread butter on the remaining slice of bread, and place on top of sauerkraut. Cook until toasted on one side, flip, and continue cooking until cheese melts.

  3. These were great! I give it a 4 only because I marinated the temphe in a little bit of soy sauce to give it a salty "corn beef" flavor. Otherwise a great substitute for a meaty sandwich!
  4. This tastes so close to the real thing you'll never know the difference. I would recommend sprinkling the tempeh with a little salt and cracked pepper and frying in olive oil before adding to the sandwich...makes the texture better. Great idea!
  5. Really good. I cut the tempeh in half and sauteed it a bit before putting it on the sandwich. I also don't like my saurkraut very wet so I sauteed it too so it was less runny. It was very very filling!
