This is great sauce. Use for dipping or poured over rice and chicken.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 (8 ounce) can pineapple tidbits, undrained
  • ⅓ cup distilled white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • ½ tablespoon steak sauce
  • ½ tablespoon cayenne pepper hot sauce
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch

Cooking Directions

  1. 1 Stir water, sugar, ketchup, pineapple, vinegar, red pepper flakes, soy sauce, steak sauce, and hot sauce together in a saucepan over medium heat. Remove 1/2 cup of the sauce to a small bowl; whisk cornstarch into the sauce in the bowl. Bring the sauce in the saucepan to a boil, stir the sauce with the cornstarch into the boiling sauce. Cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly before using.

  2. A wonderfully delicious sweet and sour sauce!! My variation is slight: I used apple cider vinegar instead of the white vinegar. I omitted the steak sauce and used Worcestershire Sauce instead.   3. My family is in LOVE with this sauce! Omitted the pepper flakes used Worcestershire in place of steak sauce and used crushed pineapple in place of tidbits. They like it better than takeout! Thank you Nana! 10 stars for this dipping nectar!
  4. Awesome sauce! I followed the recommendations of other reviewers, and cut the sugar to just a bit more than a cup, maybe a "heaping" cup. Only a pinch of red pepper flakes, too. We will DEFINITELY use this recipe again! Great recipe!
